Gong meditation is a unique type of sound therapy that involves using therapeutic gong sounds and vibrations to bring about healing. As everything around us is vibrating all the time, so are we. Sometimes we become out of tune in either mind, body or spirit and dis-ease can start to take hold.
Sound therapy has long been used to manage a broad range of health conditions. The treatments are based on the understanding that all forms of matter, including our body’s cells, vibrate at different frequencies.
Factors such as stress, depression and disease cause cells and organs within our bodies to vibrate at non-optimal frequencies. Through the healing frequencies of sound therapy our bodies can be brought back in tune and we can begin to feel healthy and balanced once more.
The goal of “gong meditation” is usually therapeutic. This practice is referred to as a “gong bath” because participants are “bathed” in meditation gong sound waves.
Participation in a gong bath involves lying on a matted floor, or sitting in a chair, with a pillow, blanket and eye mask. All you need to do is rest in a comfortable position, relax and close your eyes. Initially the gong is played very softly, as the meditation session progresses, the volume is gradually increased. Since the purpose of the meditation gong sound is healing, the volume is never upped to uncomfortable levels.
During a sound bath you are taken on a sonic and meditative journey. While you lie or sit comfortably with your eyes closed various instruments are played around you that are known for their vibratory healing frequencies, Gongs, Singing Bowls, Drums and Tuning Forks. You are free to drift where the sound takes you.
Therapeutic instruments such as Gongs and Singing Bowls stimulate the alpha and theta brain wave frequencies associated with meditative, clear and peaceful states of mind. The frequencies from the instruments activate the Parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s rest and restore response) and we can experience a sense of deep peace and relaxation. We can sometimes experience an emotional release as the body surrenders and let's go in a safe healing space.
